CNN —Jennifer Lopez isn’t phased when people are critical of her. She does, however, appear to appreciate a genuine apology when one comes her way. This includes one from “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, whose critical comments of Lopez from a 2020 podcast resurfaced earlier this month in the days leading up to the episode of “Saturday Night Live” on which they appeared together. The comments made the rounds online when Edebiri was announced as the host of an “SNL” episode in February on which Lopez was set to appear as the musical guest. “I’ve heard similar things said about me throughout my career,” she said.

Underscored by music, the montage of images has a visceral impact; we don’t need language to understand it, or to think and feel in response. “Amid Falling Walls,” though, relies heavily on lyrics and spoken text, almost all of it in Yiddish; non-Yiddish speakers, like me, will spend the performance reading supertitles, which are in English and Russian. Curated by Avram Mlotek, who wrote the libretto, and his father, Zalmen Mlotek, who is the show’s music director and arranger as well as the company’s artistic director, “Amid Falling Walls” sounds gorgeous. Its 28 musical numbers — folk music and cabaret, elegies and anthems — are played by a nine-piece orchestra tucked away upstage. But before bloodshed comes the process of dehumanization that features in all ethnic hatred, and “Amid Falling Walls” delineates that vividly.

This is not to say that her paintings all have the same enviable unity. Schutz attempts something similar in “The Gathering,” which can be read as an allegory of the art world. Nice sentiment, but when the man is a woman her reach for excellence can leave her stretched to death. The seven large-scale sculptures in the show, by the way, also abound with narrative incident, but lack the cleareyed vigor of the paintings. **Tracey Emin, the British artist and brand name, seems like the opposite of Dana Schutz.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Matt Gaetz said Sunday he will try to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Republican, from his leadership position this week after McCarthy relied on Democratic support to pass legislation that avoided a government shutdown. Gaetz, a longtime McCarthy nemesis, said on CNN's “State of the Union” that McCarthy was in “brazen, material breach” of agreements he made with House Republicans in January when he ran for speaker. As a result, Gaetz said he would be filing a “ motion to vacate the chair,” as House rules permit. Procedural votes could be offered to halt the motion or it could trigger a House floor vote on whether McCarthy, R-Calif., should remain speaker. “The only way Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House at the end of this coming week is if Democrats bail him out,” Gaetz said.

CNN —A smaller share of Gen Z is thriving compared to millennials at the same age, and members of Gen Z are far less likely to describe their mental health as “excellent,” according to a new study. The study, released Thursday, aims to reflect the voices of Gen Z on key issues the generation faces. According to the study, both millennials and members of Gen X “report far lower mental health ratings” today than they did a decade ago. “This generation may be more tuned in to recognizing issues with their mental health than older generations,” psychologist Walter Evans said. Another characteristic of Gen Z: optimismThe picture members of Gen Z paint of their lives is far from bleak.

There are just three works, among the 650 on display, signed by female artists, Leticia Ruiz, director of the Royal Collections, told CNN via phone. Luisa Roldan's 1692 sculpture “Saint Michael the Archangel Defeating the Devil (El Arcángel San Miguel venciendo al demonio)" will be on display for the first time at the Royal Collections Gallery in Madrid, Spain. The exhibit starts with the Hapsburg monarchs’ royal collections — located near the old city wall exhibit — and then one level below, the Bourbon dynasty collections. On a floor below that are the temporary exhibitions, which start with carriages from the Royal Collections and some on loan from other institutions, Ruiz said. A third of the museum’s 650 items will be rotated annually back to the royal palaces and other Patrimonio sites and replaced with other items from their collections.

“That,” Charmatz said, “was the first smell of what the next season, and my work here, will be.”His task isn’t easy. In the years immediately after Bausch’s death, the company was run by the longtime Wuppertal dancer Dominique Mercy and the rehearsal director Robert Sturm; they were succeeded in 2013 by another veteran dancer, Lutz Förster. “I was prepared to say no,” said Charmatz, who was initially approached by a search committee. ImageFavorite PaintingDear Diary:A few years ago, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and, as is my habit, stopped in to say “hello” to my favorite painting, Velázquez’s “Juan de Pareja.”My custom is to take a seat on the bench across from Juan, and then together we carry on, silently, having long intense conversations on art, philosophy, aesthetics, even politics. On this particular occasion, as I entered the gallery, I saw a well-dressed, middle-aged woman sitting on my usual bench and staring at Juan. I have become used to having Juan all to myself, so I was mildly annoyed. She was probably resting and would walk away in a few minutes, I thought to myself.
(Editors note: Paragraph 11 contains language some readers may find offensive)A video with clips of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden that have been digitally altered is being shared by users who believe it to be real. The video includes clips from the documentary Pelosi in the House, made by Pelosi’s daughter Alexandra (here). We’re at [redacted], which has facilities for the House and the Senate to meet. Project Veritas and James O’Keefe, both mentioned in the video, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Audio tracks appearing to be the voices of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden were added onto various clips.
Turns out it’s the same sample, a sleight of ear designed to trigger warm nostalgia, and also maybe a little confusion. Even its video is optimized for recognition, with Santana doing the same stomp Beyoncé does in hers, in an almost identical outfit. Throughout 2022, that gambit has been deployed again and again — by pop singers and rappers, established stars and newbies. Here, old songs — hip-hop classics, pop novelties and more — are scrunched and stretched sometimes to the point of absurdity. These songs are concessions that say the quiet part out loud — everyone has always been borrowing voraciously, from everyone else, constantly.
Jell-O GirlEarly Jell-O advertising depicted women as inept, needing the help of a simple recipe like Jell-O. Jell-O released flavors such as seasoned tomato, celery, mixed vegetable and Italian salad, and Jell-O salads were a colorful way to use leftovers in side dishes. In 1955, the company introduced the slogan “A Jell-O salad makes the meal.”“The Jell-O salad really hits the American sensibility and palate perfectly. Constance Bannister Corp/Getty ImagesBut as more Americans traveled and global cuisines entered the mainstream, the simplicity of Jell-O salads became a downside. “Upscale becomes the new mainstream and Jell-O salads moves into a niche,” Shapiro said.
New York CNN Business —Sen. Ted Cruz’s “The View” interview was disrupted by protesters multiple times on Monday, including some demanding the Texas Republican talk about climate change. Later in the interview, Cruz was interrupted once again. “Three members of the audience interrupted ‘The View’ today during Sen. Ted Cruz’s appearance protesting about climate,” said a “View” spokesperson. “They were promptly escorted out by security.”The protesters at The View once again start shouting from the crowd as the segment goes to break. You don’t do it to Hillary Clinton, who stood up and said, ‘Trump stole the election,’” Cruz said.
Becky G was just 14 years old when she signed her first record deal. In 2016, Becky started releasing songs in Spanish, finding a wider audience and recognition. “I use the word collaboration a lot, because to me, that’s where the magic happens. 1 spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart. That’s really where I tried to focus a lot of my energy and make an impact.
Some jazz trends that may come to define this decade are already taking shape, and a major one is happening at the keyboard. Pianists are moving with greater ease and intent between melodic passages and abstract ones, and doing so more routinely than before. But while some younger players (such as David Virelles , Marta Sánchez and Micah Thomas ) have adapted the technique, this isn’t a youth movement. Such veterans as Angelica Sanchez and Sylvie Courvoisier have made it a prominent part of their arsenals, as have midcareer players like John Escreet and Orrin Evans . Angelica Sanchez’s “Sparkle Beings” (Sunnyside, due out Sept. 23) and Mr. Escreet’s “Seismic Shift” (Whirlwind, Oct. 7) both feature stellar sidemen and showcase this style along with other increasingly influential aspects of their work.
